Nearly a month ago, I woke up with my first ever vertigo attack. The entire room was spinning and I couldn’t lift my head without a wave of naseau coming over me.
After a quick trip to urgent care, the doctor told me that everything looked good and they had no idea why this happened. “It should go away eventually on its own”.
A few days later, and my head was still spinning. It didn’t go away. It had become something I had to learn to live with. This meant no long walks outside, no taking advantage of Arizona’s beautiful winter season, no hot yoga, and definitely no lifting weights. In an instance, I could no longer do 90% of the things I enjoy most in this life.
After a few weeks of searching for answers, I found an upper cervical chiropractor who diagnosed the issues I was experiencing. Finally a glimmer of hope! While this is a story for another article, I soon began to feel like myself again.
Then, after a quick trip to Mexico, I found myself incredibly sick and bedridden with the flu. 3 days of pure misery and a few days more of feeling weak and defeated.
I’m not telling you any of this so that you feel bad for me. I’m telling you this because I see sickness as a sign.
Sickness is your body’s way of telling you to slow down.
Many of us know we need to slow down, stop stressing the small stuff and learn to enjoy where we are at. However, how often do we actually listen?
When we are ill, we have no other choice but to surrender and rest our bodies. There’s no way we can physically or mentally push ourselves when overcome with a fever, dizziness, nausea, or body aches.
Your body is screaming at you to make a change. It is forcing you to make that change, whether you like it or not. It’s a chance for you to push the brakes and evaluate what isn’t working in your life.
My vertigo happened to come upon me in the middle of a “Plateau Push” fitness challenge where I was doing some of the hardest workouts I’ve done in months. Instead of seeing that this was probably too intense for my body at the time, I pushed through the challenge. When I didn’t get the message, I mysteriously woke up with vertigo.
Take action: If you’re experiencing any weird symptoms, or unusual sicknesses, I want you to look at your life. Is there somewhere you are going against your intuition? Maybe you are putting your energy towards a friend that is bad for you. Perhaps you are self-destructing by drinking too much or eating too much sugar.
Many times, the answers we need to why things are happening to us is within us all along. Trust your intuition and use it to guide you on your path.
Remember rest is ok. You aren’t lazy. You are human. We are meant to laugh all day and night with friends, spend hours enjoying our meals, and soak in the sunshine all afternoon. The human experience is not about being productive 100% of the time.
It’s about finding the joy in the small parts of living.
Take some time to rest this Sunday 🌼
Sending love,
Madison
As a society, it is so deeply engraved in us that rest = laziness.
Slowing down is definitely a process!! Glad you’re feeling better 🤍
